I can’t help but wonder if the drift away from the orthodoxy of the creeds in the last two centuries could have been avoided if we read someone as orthodox as Aquinas.

Plus Aquinas reminds me of David in Psalm 27, desiring one thing above all: to contemplate the beauty of the Lord. More and more, I see why one of my other theological companions, John Owen, was so indebted to Aquinas. Both men make me love Jesus more.“

Ich glaube Barrett natürlich jedes Wort, wenn er von seiner Liebe zu Jesus spricht. Und seine Liebe zu Gottes Wort steht auch außer Frage. Dennoch …

Einer der Evangelikalen, die Aquin schätzen (wäre verehren zu weit gegriffen?), ist sicherlich Matthew Barrett. Sein Buch „The Reformation as Renewal“ hätte man auch „Redeeming Aquinas“ nennen können. Wobei „Redeeming Titel“ wohl Vern Poythress vorbehalten sind. 😉

Ich weiß noch wie Barrett mitgeteilt hat, dass Baker ihn angefragt hat eine Systematische Theologie zu schreiben. Begeistert hat er von seinem Projekt des „retrieval“ geschrieben, die seine Systematische Theologie prägen wird. Bei mir hat das nur einen Gedanken ausgelöst: Obwohl ich begeistert Systematische Theologien lese, werde ich die von ihm auslassen.

Das Gute ist ja, dass wir in einer Zeit leben, in der es viele gute, reformierte ST gibt. Ich sehe es für mich so: Wer John M. Frame hat, dazu noch die vierbändige von Beeke/Smalley und die meiner Meinung nach unterschätzte von Gerald Bray „God is Love“, der wird auch ohne Barrett auskommen.
