Das verlorene Interview mit J.I. Packer
Vor fünf Jahren hat Joel Belz den großen Theologen J.I. Packer in Kanada interviewt. Die Aufnahme ging auf der Rückreise nach North Carolina (USA) verloren. Letztes Jahr erhielt Belz ein Päcken ohne Absender. Enthalten waren die damals verschwundenen Utensilien; die Tonaufnahmen mit dem inzwischen 87 Jahre alten Packer waren dabei. Gott sei Dank, denn Packer hatte einen guten Tag.
Das Gespräch mit dem Puritaner-Experten dürfte vor allem Theologen interessieren. Den Presbyterianern hat Packer auch etwas mit auf den Weg zu geben:
As for content, here I’m thinking of the doctrinal basis of a lot of 20th century evangelical organizations. You have first of all the authority of Scripture affirmed. Secondly, the triunity of God affirmed. Third, the fallenness of the man who was created in the image of God affirmed. Fourth, the incarnation affirmed. Fifth, the atonement affirmed. Sixth, the new birth by the Spirit through faith affirmed. Seventh, justification through faith affirmed. I believe that theologically, in light of John 3, the new birth is a work of God the Spirit out of which faith comes, rather than saying with the Arminians that faith comes, and through faith the new birth takes place. In other words, the primacy of regeneration by the Holy Spirit. Eight, the church sustained by every member along with the ministry of official ministers—all animated by the Holy Spirit and all constituting Christ’s ministry to His people through His people. I wanted to say all that because you’re Presbyterian and I wanted to make sure that you hear it right. Presbyterianism actually hasn’t said anything like enough about the Holy Spirit in every member’s ministry. It’s tended to say altogether too much about the office of official ministries. There’s an imbalance there in the heritage.

Ein Plädoyer für die Katechese
Als ich vor einigen Tagen das Buch:
- J.I. Packer u. Gary A. Parrett: Grounded in the Gospel: Building Believers the Old-Fashioned Way, Baker Book House, 2010
in die Hände bekam, bin ich zunächst erschrocken. Schon in der Einleitung loben die Autoren die Päpste Johannes Paul II. und Benedict XVI. und machen die Jungschararbeit in den evangelikalen Gemeinden mitverantwortlich dafür, dass der Durchschnittschrist von heute seine Glaubensgrundlagen nicht kennt. Je mehr ich mich jedoch in das Buch hineingelesen habe, desto stärker war ich beeindruckt. Die Autoren haben nichts gegen Kinder- und Jugendarbeit per se, sondern plädieren dafür, dass die systematisch-biblische Unterweisung wieder aufgewertet wird. Wir sind sehr geprägt von der Fast food-Kultur, auch im Gemeindeleben. Um der Lehre angemessen Raum zu geben, müssen – so Packer und Parett – die unterhaltsamen Anteile zugunsten der Katechese reduziert werden. Außerdem: Systematisch Lehren kann nicht jeder, sondern nur derjenige, der selbst mit dem christlichen Glauben vertraut ist. Leider spielt diese Qualifikation bei der Auswahl von Mitarbeitern heute oft nur eine untergeordnete Rolle, frei nach dem Motto: Hauptsache, es kümmert sich jemand um die Kinder. Die Autoren wollen gegen den Strom schwimmen und führen sehr überzeugend in die Grundlagen der Katechese ein.
Zu dem Buch, das Packer gemeinsam mit einem ehemaligen Studenten verfasst hat, schreibt der Verlag:
Historically, the church’s ministry of grounding new believers in the essentials of the faith has been known as catechesis – systematic instruction in faith foundations, including what we believe, how we pray and worship, and how we conduct our lives. For most evangelicals today, however, this very idea is an alien concept. Packer and Parrett, concerned for the state of the church, seek to inspire a much needed evangelical course correction. This new book makes the case for a recovery of significant catechesis as a nonnegotiable practice of churches, showing the practice to be complementary to, and of no less value than, Bible study, expository preaching, and other formational ministries, and urging evangelical churches to find room for this biblical ministry for the sake of their spiritual health and vitality.
Die Gospel Coalition schreibt in einer Besprechung des Buches:
Packer and Parrett move from history to explanation to application in their vision to see catechesis restored to the body of Christ. Anyone would benefit from reading Grounded in the Gospel for this is no dry exercise in educational theory within the church. Rather it is a thoroughly informed and passionate plea to fully comprehend the essence and faithfully apply the implications of the Gospel. Pastors, elders, and parents will benefit especially from the vision and strategy of this timely and important book.

Schreibt J.I. Packer eine Systematische Theologie?
Warren Cole Smith hat für das WORLD Magazine (Dec 5, 2009, Vol. 24, No. 24) ein Feature über den 80 Jahre alten J.I. Packer verfasst. Er äußert sich dort kurz zu seinem Wunsch, eine Dogmatik zu hinterlassen. Es heißt:
… Aber ein Buch fehlt im Kanon Packers: eine Systematische Theologie. Er unterrichtete viele Jahre Systematische Theologie am Regent College (Vancouver, Kanada), so hat er sicherlich schweres Material für so ein Werk vorliegen. Wird das Buch noch kommen? »Ich habe einen Plan«, sagte Packer. »Aber möglicherweise fehlt mir nötige Zeit. Ich würde der Welt gern eine Theologie hinterlassen, die sowohl katechetisch als auch verbindlich ist. Aber wir müssen sehen, was Gott auf Lager hat.«
Packer hat im Gespräch zudem drei hilfreiche Ratschläge »aus dem Arm geschüttelt«:
To new husbands: My advice to a new husband is nothing more than »husbands, love your wives.« And »love your wife as Christ has loved the church.« Never forget that you are Christ’s representative in serving your wife.
To new pastors: You have three priorities: teach, teach, and teach. Evangelical churches are weaker than we realize because we don’t teach the confessions and doctrine. Set new standards in teaching. Understand the word catechesis, and practice that art.
To web devotees: I’m amazed at the amount of time people spend on the internet. I’m not against technology, but all tools should be used to their best advantage. We should be spending our time on things that have staying power, instead of on the latest thought of the latest blogger—and then moving on quickly to the next blogger. That makes us more superficial, not more thoughtful.
