Piper: Heiligung II

Piper hat auf der diesjährigen „Desiring God“-Konferenz auch in seiner Abschlusspredigt über Heiligung gesprochen. Er erörtert die Schönheit der Heiligung und spricht darüber, dass der Heiligungsprozess mit dem Kreuz beginnt.

Hier das eindrucksvolle Zitat von Edwards, mit dem Piper seine Predigt eröffnet (Jonathan Edwards, „The ‚Miscellanies‘“, The Works of Jonathan Edwards, Vol. 13, New Haven: Yale University Press, 1994, S. 163–164 [zitiert aus dem Transkript]):

We drink in strange notions of holiness from our childhood, as if it were a melancholy, morose, sour, and unpleasant thing; but there is nothing in it but what is sweet and ravishingly lovely. ‘Tis the highest beauty and amiableness, vastly above all other beauties. ‘Tis a divine beauty, makes the soul heavenly and far purer than anything here on earth … ‘Tis of a sweet, pleasant, charming, lovely, amiable, delightful, serene, calm, and still nature. ‘Tis almost too high a beauty for any creatures to be adorned with; it makes the soul a little, sweet, and delightful image of the blessed Jehovah.

Oh, how may angels stand, with pleased, delighted, and charmed eyes, and look and look, with smiles of pleasure upon their lips, upon that soul that is holy; how may they hover over such a soul, to delight to behold such loveliness! … What a sweet calmness, what a calm ecstasy, doth it bring to the soul! How doth it make the soul love itself; how doth it make the pure invisible world love it; yea, how doth God love it and delight in it; how do even the whole creation, the sun, the fields, and trees love a humble holiness; how doth all the world congratulate, embrace, and sing to a sanctified soul! …

It makes the soul like a delightful field or garden planted by God … where the sun is Jesus Christ; the blessed beams and calm breeze, the Holy Spirit; the sweet and delightful flowers, and the pleasant shrill music of the little birds, are the Christian graces.

Or like the little white flower: pure, unspotted, and undefiled, low and humble, pleasing and harmless; receiving the beams, the pleasant beams of the serene sun, gently moved and a little shaken by a sweet breeze, rejoicing as it were in a calm rapture, diffusing around [a] most delightful fragrancy, standing most peacefully and lovingly in the midst of the other like flowers round about.

Auf der „Desiring God“-Konferenz 2012 wurde viel über Heiligung gesprochen. Hier die Eröffnungspredigt von John Piper mit dem Titel: „Prelude to Acting the Miracle: Putting Sanctification in Its Place“. Piper spricht über „Was ist Heiligung?“ und „Wo ist der rechte ‚Ort‘ für Heiligung im Leben eines Christen?“.

Nigeria: Massaker an christlichen Studenten

Mehrere Quellen haben bestätigt, dass etwa 25 bis 30 christliche College-Studenten an einer Universität im Nordosten Nigerias am späten Montagabend massakriert wurden. Über die Motive für das Massaker wird derzeit noch spekuliert. Als sicher gilt, dass die islamistische Gruppe „Boko Haram“ für die Tat verantwortlich ist.

Das Verbrechen hat eine internationale Gebetsinitiative angestoßen. Wie Emily Fuentes von dem Hilfswerk „Open Doors“ gegenüber der Presseagentur Christian Post äußerte, sei es sehr wichtig, für die betroffenen Christen in Nigeria zu beten.

Wir sollten auch für die Täter beten. Ein Terrorist von „Boko Haram“ – so Open Doors – habe bereits zum Glauben an Jesus Christus gefunden.

Francis Schaeffer zum 100. Geburtstag

Das Magazin Credo hat die Oktober-Ausgabe Francis Schaeffer (1912–1984)  gewidmet. Dabei sind Artikel von Bruce Little, William Edgar, Bryan A. Follis und Stephen Wellum.

The year 2012 is the 100th anniversary of the birth of Francis Schaeffer (1912–1984). It is difficult to think of an evangelical figure in the 20th century who so seriously engaged the philosophies and ideologies of the secular world and set them over against the Christian worldview than Francis Schaeffer.

But Schaeffer was no ordinary evangelical. The man wore knickers and knee high socks when he lectured, sporting not only long hair but a goat’s-chin beard! Most importantly, Schaeffer did not fear man, but feared God. Not only did he engage secular worldviews, but he confronted his fellow evangelicals, even rebuking them for doctrinal concession and compromise.

As many have observed, it is not an overstatement to say that the Schaeffers transformed, reshaped, and in many ways reformed American evangelicalism. Those writing in this new issue of Credo Magazine are proof, each writer bearing testimony to how Francis Schaeffer has made a monumental impact on how we understand and articulate the Christian faith and life in the world of ideas. Geschlossene Gesellschaften

Der Verlag schreibt:

Nach Ende des Kalten Krieges warfen die meisten kommunistischen Staaten ihre marxistischen Prinzipien über Bord und etablierten ein neues Regierungssystem. Doch es gab einige wenige Länder, in denen es der kommunistischen Partei gelang, an der Macht zu bleiben. Genau diese Staaten bereiste der amerikanische Fotograf Tomas van Houtryve in den vergangenen sieben Jahren, wobei er bisweilen viele Hürden zu überwinden hatte, um an sein jeweiliges Ziel zu kommen. In Nordkorea zeigt sich der Kommunismus von seiner rigidesten und besonders grotesken Seite. In Moldawien und Kuba befindet er sich in der Auflösung, durchdringt aber immer noch das reaktionäre System. In China, Vietnam und Laos bemüht sich die kommunistische Regierung um eine Annährung an die westliche Marktwirtschaft. In Nepal hingegen herrscht eine völlig andere Situation: Statt sich vom Kommunismus zu lösen, strebt dieses Land nach seiner Einführung! Van Houtryves Fotografien zeigen deutlich den Unterschied zwischen vielversprechender kommunistischer Theorie und gelebter Praxis, der oft an die Grenzen des Menschlichen führt.

 

 

Werden Christen in Europa verfolgt?

„Christen in Europa steht die Verfolgung bevor“, meldete das Online-Portal The Parlament am 2. Oktober 2012. Der Titel ist zu reißerisch, geklagt wird auf zu hohem Niveau. Dennoch ist die Beobachtung richtig, dass Menschen, die sich zu einer einer christlichen Ethik bekennen, in Europa mit wachsender Intoleranz konfrontiert werden:

Several speakers, including MEPs, said Christians in countries like the UK faced „increasing levels of intolerance“ because they had „dared“ to be critical of Islam and homosexuality. EPP member Anna Zaborska went even further, saying Christians were being „persecuted for their beliefs“. She cited an example of „intolerance“ the „difficulties“ some workers have in wearing the Christian cross while at work. Zaborska said she was referring to two British Christians– British Airways check-in clerk Nadia Eweida and NHS hospital nurse Shirley Chaplin – who were refused the legal right to wear a cross at work and are now asking the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg to overturn the British judgments. Lawyers briefed by the UK coalition are expected to tell the court that Christians in Britain should not expect to be allowed to wear a cross at work or with a uniform. Zaborska, a Hungarian MEP, said the EU had a role to play in „defending freedom of speech“, adding, „This is all about respect of human rights. „This is a universal right and, in cases where it is being abuse, the EU has a right to speak out in the defence of it.“ The deputy was one of the keynote speakers at a high-profile seminar organised by the ECR group in parliament on „discrimination“ against Christians in Europe.

In Rom ändert sich das Bild von Luther

Vor rund 500 Jahren verurteilte der Vatikan die Lehren Martin Luthers und belegte den Wittenberger mit dem Kirchen-Bann. Seither ist der deutsche Reformator ein Stolperstein bei der Suche nach Einheit zwischen den getrennten Kirchen. Doch in letzter Zeit verändert sich in Rom die Stimmung.
